Course overview:
Python is a powerful yet beginner-friendly programming language, widely used to automate accounting tasks, visualise financial data, and explore advanced analytics.
In this course, participants will learn core Python skills and discover how they can be applied to real-world accounting tasks, including automation, data analysis and visualisation, and machine learning.
No prior Python experience is required. This course is limited to 30 participants.
Agenda:
First Hour – Python Basics
- Introduction to Python in an accounting and finance context
- Writing and running Python code using Google Colab
- Exploring data types, variables, and functions
- Using Python libraries relevant to accounting and finance
Second Hour – Live Demonstrations
- Automating repetitive accounting tasks
- Analysing and visualising financial data
- Exploring introductory machine learning applications in accounting and finance
Participant Advice
- Using two screens is recommended to follow the live coding demonstrations more easily
- A Google account is required to access and use Google Colab during the webinar

Meet Your Instructor
Dr Michael Guo is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the University of the West of Scotland, UK, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He specialises in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in accounting and finance.
His recent research includes a Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) funded project that examines the impact of AI on the future of the accounting profession in the UK. The project focuses on changes in required skillsets, shifts in professional roles, and ethical implications.
