Course overview:

The rise of cryptocurrencies has created both opportunities and challenges for Accountants. As digital assets become increasingly common in personal portfolios and corporate balance sheets, understanding their mechanics and accounting implications is more important than ever.

This course will equip accounting professionals with a practical understanding of cryptocurrencies, providing a solid foundation in crypto fundamentals and practical guidance on the accounting treatment of crypto transactions.

Agenda:
  • Understand the fundamental basics of crypto, including key terms such as blockchain, exchanges, wallets, tokens vs. coins
  • Explore risks and address common misconceptions around cryptocurrencies, including traceability and volatility
  • Identify the key questions to ask crypto-owning clients, including both individuals and companies
  • How to use block explorers to verify crypto transactions
  • Recognise different types of on-chain transactions and their accounting implications
  • Understand the accrual vs. cash basis concepts in the context of on-chain transactions
  • Understand the difference between passive holdings and trading activity, and the timing of recognition for realised versus unrealised gains or losses
  • Understand wallet structures (cold vs. hot wallets) and the risks associated with each
  • Explore tools and software that support accurate crypto reporting and provide third-party evidence for year-end balances

Meet Your Instructor

Terence Agius is the Finance Manager at Tum Invest, where he oversees a group of companies operating within the property sector. With over eight years of experience in accounting and finance, Terence has developed expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and audit support. He is currently completing the final stage of the ACCA qualification and holds certification in Crypto Accounting.
